Worth knowing

Where two quotes for the same room differ

A room takes roughly the same time to roll whoever does it. What moves the number is everything before that: how many holes get filled, whether the patches get primed, whether the trim gets sanded and caulked, and whether the walls need a skim where old texture shows through. Ask each painter to list those and the gap between two prices usually explains itself.

Sheen is the decision people spend the least time on and then notice the most. Flat hides a wall that is not perfectly flat and marks easily. Eggshell and satin wash well but throw light along the surface and show every dent. Gloss on trim looks hard and shows every brush mark.

Color gets chosen on the wall or it gets chosen twice. Put a sample patch about two feet across on the wall it is going on, look at it in the morning and again under the lamps at night, and look at it next to the floor and the furniture.

When a room is due

Four things worth
a phone call.

Patches showing through

Filler that was never primed reads as a shadow from across the room once the light is on it.

Marks that no longer wash off

Washing a flat finish eventually burnishes it and takes the sheen with it, leaving shiny patches.

Cracks that keep coming back

A crack that reopens in the same line is movement, and it needs taping rather than filling again.

A color you have stopped seeing

Rooms drift slowly. Hold a sheet of white paper against a wall you think is white.

Questions

Asked before
this job gets booked.

It depends on the size of the room, how much patching it needs and how many coats the color change takes. You get the timing with the estimate.
No. Interior painting goes room by room, so the rest of the house stays usable. Plan on the room being painted staying out of use until the paint is dry.
Bring the can or the color code if you have it. Without one, a paint store can scan a chip from a hidden spot, though aged paint does not always match exactly.
Flat hides bumps and small flaws. Eggshell and satin wipe clean better, so they suit hallways, kitchens and kids’ rooms. Semi-gloss is the usual choice on trim and doors.
