Why a patch shows through paint

Filler and the paper face of drywall take paint differently. An unprimed patch soaks up the first coat and dries duller than the wall around it, so it shows as a flat spot in side light. Priming the patch before the finish coat is what stops it.

A crack that keeps reopening is movement, usually at the corners of doors and windows. Filling it again lasts until the next season. It needs tape bedded in compound and feathered out wide, so the joint can flex without splitting the paint.
